Sonny’s Blues
I believe that Sonny is the most important character in this story. Sonny is described by the narrator as being wild, but not crazy. Sonny’s dream is to become a jazz musician some day. Sonny is sidetracked from this dream because his brother discourages him. His brother sees hanging around in night clubs, downing around on bandstands while people were pushed around on the floor as a waste of time and money. This story is great because it can still relate to dreams and aspirations to us today. Most dreams are always challenged by someone in and out of your circle, whether its friend or foe.
Sonny finishes high school while living with Isabel’s family, but only because they own a piano. Sonny is desperately trying to express himself through his music and to his brother by sharing with him his dreams and aspirations. No one really understands Sonny. One may conclude that because Sonny was so misunderstood he started using drugs at this point in the story. This aspect of the story shows that if your not strong in your dreams or to have some one to back you up in those dreams the my faultier.
But my favorite message behind words part was when the narrator repeats his question concerning Sonny’s fate, the boy recites a scenario, or narrative, with which he seems to have some familiarity, one of Sonny being sent to “some place” where they will “cure” him, after which “Maybe he’ll even think he’s kicked the habit. Then they’ll let him loose’—he gestured, throwing his cigarette into the gutter. ‘‘That’s all’”. It shows even though he may get his life straight he will still have to face society views on once a junkie always a junkie.
This is as far as I got but I had to stop reading this and clear my mind because I was watching Blue Hill Avenue and start mixing them together even though there from two different time periods….I don’t know…confusing…LOL.
